Renewable energy supply came from the hydroelectric power plant, operated by Kallpa.
Cia. Minera Antapaccay is the first active mining operation in Peru to achieve IREC international recertification for supplying 100% of its electricity from renewable sources, effective January 1, 2021. Thus, by the end of 2022, a total of 2,118,660 MW of electricity from renewable sources will have been consumed, reducing approximately 40% of the carbon footprint.
“We are proud to achieve this recertification, which shows that we are contributing to Peru’s achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals related to carbon footprint reduction,” said Carlos Cotera, general manager of Cia Minera Antapaccay.
The iRec certification was awarded by Kallpa Generación, owner of the Cerro del Águila hydroelectric power plant, which supplies Antapaccay with electricity. Since 2021, IREC certifies the renewable origin of the energy produced by this hydroelectric power plant.
“Water is the most abundant renewable source in our country, which allows us to generate clean and efficient energy for Peru’s key industries, such as mining,” said Rosa María Flores-Araoz, CEO of Kallpa.
The certification delivered by Kallpa Generación comes from the International REC Standard, a non-profit organization that since 2014 provides a tracking system for renewable attributes to be used by governments, private companies and other stakeholders. IREC operates in countries that account for more than 50% of global electricity consumption, certifying the renewable origin of the energy generation and supply process.
