Cerro del Águila Hydroelectric Power Plant contributes to preventing the effects of El Niño in Tayacaja

It will install irrigation infrastructure and water storage systems in six communities to help ensure water availability for the agricultural season.

With the aim of joining efforts to prevent the potential impact of El Niño in its area of influence, the Cerro del Águila Hydroelectric Power Plant, operated by Kallpa, will contribute to improving irrigation infrastructure by installing water supply systems to help ensure water availability for crops and prevent damage to agricultural activities, the main source of income in the area.

In the communities of Andaymarca, Suylloc Quintao, Pichiu, Capcas and Jatuspata, ten 10 m³ tanks will be installed and incorporated into existing irrigation systems. In addition, a 100-meter water distribution network will be installed, according to the conditions and technical requirements of each irrigation system in each community.

Additionally, in the community of Llocce Huantaccero, which is more exposed to potential droughts, materials and accessories will be provided for the construction of an additional reservoir with a capacity of 50 m³ of irrigation water, including the necessary finishing work and appropriate conditions to ensure optimal operation.

These actions will benefit more than 200 farming families who collectively cultivate 230 hectares of avocado and corn. The entire process is being carried out in coordination with the beneficiaries and the board of directors of each community, as part of the 2026–2027 agricultural season.

“At the Cerro del Águila Hydroelectric Power Plant, we always work hand in hand with our communities, and given the current El Niño situation, we are stepping up our efforts to help ensure water availability, which is essential for agricultural activities in the area,” emphasized Luis Eduardo Alburqueque, Social Management Manager at Cerro del Águila.

As part of its social commitment and Shared Social Management policy, the company is promoting its campaign, “Allies for the Climate: Reducing El Niño Risks in the Cerro del Águila Hydroelectric Power Plant’s Area of Influence,” which aims to prioritize actions in response to this natural phenomenon in coordination with local authorities and the community.
