Solarpack begins construction of the largest solar photovoltaic plant in Peru, in alliance with Kallpa

With a total installed capacity of nearly 300 MW, contracted by the power company Kallpa, the San Martin solar photovoltaic plant will start operating in the second quarter of 2025 in the district of La Joya, Arequipa.

Solarpack Corporación Tecnológica S.A.U. (“Solarpack”), a global renewable energy company based in Spain, has begun construction of what will be the largest solar power plant in Peru’s history. The San Martin project, located in the district of La Joya in the province of Arequipa, has a total installed capacity of almost 300 MW.

This project materializes after an agreement reached with Kallpa Generación, a leading private company in the Peruvian market that produces 23.44% of the electricity consumed by the country. Kallpa has a long-term contract for all the energy that San Martín will produce, expanding and strengthening its portfolio with non-conventional renewable energy.

This development is aligned with Peru’s energy transition objectives, promoting greater generation of non-conventional renewable energy and contributing to the diversification of its current energy matrix. San Martin will generate more than 830 GWh per year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 440,000 homes. It will avoid more than 564,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. The plant will use state-of-the-art technology to optimize the efficiency of solar energy production.

The project is scheduled to be operational in the second quarter of 2025, creating 450 jobs during construction.

Leo Moreno, Solarpack’s Global CEO, commented: “The San Martin project reaffirms Solarpack’s ability to develop, contract and build large international projects, supporting our clients with projects that can be built on time and on budget. We are proud to help Peru reduce its carbon emissions and support its socioeconomic development with the creation of jobs and social benefits.” This PPA agreement with Kallpa supports Solarpack’s international diversification strategy and the signing of agreements with blue-chip clients.

Rosa María Flores-Araoz, CEO of Kallpa, said: “This agreement and the start-up of the project will allow us to continue diversifying energy sources for our customers in Peru, and reaffirms the strength of the Peruvian electricity system to promote the development of non-conventional renewable projects in favor of a more sustainable and secure energy matrix. The project was awarded on August 25, 2022 by the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) and, as of today, has obtained all the necessary licenses to start construction.
